Le
Manoir Alexandre is located in the city of Espalion on the Lot River in
the Aveyron region, a very beautiful part of France.
Espalion
is a cultural and historical city linking the wild and mountainous Auvergne
region with the southern latin and mediterranean cultures.
On the north side of the river lies the Aubrac plateau, a sort of French
highland where cattle graze on open pastures. The cows of the Aubrac breed
give a flavoured milk which is used to make the local cheese, the Laguiole.
This land of Aubrac is famous for its gastonomy. Here you will find the
Michel Bras restaurant, a French gastronomic shrine with three Michelin
stars.
It is also the country of one of the world's most renowned brand of knives,
the Laguiole. Laguiole is the name of the capital city of Aubrac.
Located
at the bottom of wild Aubrac, along the Lot Valley, are some of the most
beautiful villages in France like Estaing and Saint-Côme d'Olt.
Each year thousands of pilgrims cross by these villages on their way to
Saint-Jacques de Compostelle in Spain. It is in this region that you will
find our headquarters in Espalion.
Remember
the One Hundred Year War
Once upon a time, the country of the Black Prince.
During the One Hundred Year War, the Rouergue (former name of Aveyron)
became a British territory for a short period after 1360. For three years
the King of France was an English prisoner and ceded one quarter of his
kingdom of France as ransom. The elder son of Edouard III, the Prince
of Wales, called the Black Prince because of the colour of his armour,
was a dreadful personage among the local population. But we don't know
if the Black Prince enjoyed the delights of duck Foie gras during his
occupation.
